Teen Drinking

Research question: Are parents responsible for teen drinking?

Norton, Amy. "Parents' Drinking Influences Teenagers." Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, February, 2008. Wilson Web 31 Oct. 2011.

Summary:

This article reviews research that demonstrates that parents are the most influential factor in determining whether or not teens drink or abuse alcohol. First the research found that parent drinking habits correlate with teen drinking habits. It also suggests that lax parenting combined with harsh punishment influences teens to drink. Conversely, parents who moniter their teens and are perceived to be warm and caring, raise teens who have reduced odds of drinking and getting drunk.

Conclusion:

Although I originally thought peers are most influencial in determining whether or not a teen drinks, this article points to research that suggests that parents are more influencial. It also explains the specific parenting behaviors that are related to teen drinking, so I can further explain that in my essay.
